OUR STORY
Kivu Love began as Seka Handbags, a sewing project in southwest Rwanda. It has since been renamed “Kivu Love”, because the organization now supports not only the women who work at Seka Handbags, but also provides relief - for housing, education, or medical expenses - for families, orphans, and widows in Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. Kivu Love is named after the beautiful Lake Kivu located in the region.
The goal of Seka Handbags was originally to provide women in rural Rwanda with opportunities for safe, dignified employment. Our vision has always been to create avenues for women and families to empower themselves and their loved ones and reinvest in their communities. However, as the years working with these families have passed, it became increasingly evident that in order for self-empowerment to be achieved, basic needs must first be met. This is how Seka Handbags began its transformation to Kivu Love and became not only a job opportunity, but also a resource for struggling families across three countries. By offering assistance with medical bills, education fees, housing and food costs, we provide a solid foundation for these families to stand on while they continue to invest in themselves and their communities. Another exciting avenue we have provided in the past and plan to continue with our donors’ support, is our livestock program, in which we have been able to provide families with cows or pigs in order to not only alleviate the effects of poverty and malnutrition, but also to provide an empowering, sustainable livelihood.
